Business Planning

Owner managed businesses require business plans and cash flow forecasting for differing reasons and plans vary accordingly. They can range from single page to hundreds of pages and vary according to their primary purpose, (for example for internal management control or to support funding applications) and whether prepared for a new start up or an established buisness.
To support funding applications:
- Typically 12+ pages. Not so detailed as to lose the message.
- Include financial projections (profitability, balance sheet & cash flow)
- Include information "obvious" to internal management but necessary for third parties to understand structure, strengths and positioning of the business
- Include personal profiles (ie like a CV)
- Include information on target markets, contracts, unique selling proposition (USP), market share assumptions and marketing activity.
- Emphasise strengths as well as identifying any weakness and how those have been addressed.
For internal control and to determine strategic direction:
- Typically 20+ pages. Detailed.
- Include financial projections (profitability, balance sheet & cash flow) and a detailed breakdown of those elements (budgets).
- Include detailed analysis of target markets, competitors, market share assumptions and marketing actions, reactions and promotions
- Use as an information resource for internal management.
- Detailed SWOT analysis including consideration of consequential tactics, strategies and actions.
- Consider the management of all resources required including property, personnel, finance, equipment etc.
- Regularly updated.
